Catching Up + Life as a New Mom + Wine

Y'all how is August almost over?!    After spending some time over the weekend with my family from Georgia I've decided that 1.) I want to add y'all to my vocab (I mean Maryland is below the mason-dixon line) and 2.) that I need a southern accent because everything sounds sweeter with a southern accent.
Seriously though, I'm not sure I'm ready for fall yet. I feel like my summer just started!

I just want to apologize in advance for the randomness of this post.  It's going to be all over the place.

So this guy is 2 months old today...
Seriously where is the time going??

So what have you all been up to?  I keep meaning to sit down to blog but then someone needs my attention, either baby Mills, the dog, my husband, an episode of Million Dollar Listing, etc.  Then the next thing I know a few hours have passed and I'm like ehhh I'll get to it tomorrow.

We have been so busy around here trying to soak up the last few weeks of summer.  We spent last week down in OBX with K's family and it was so nice to get away and see the sand and ocean but let me tell you vacationing with a baby is NOT A VACATION.  That was probably the hardest part.  While my in-laws were super helpful and took Mills off our hands as much as they could it's not the same as years past where I would spend 12 hours on the beach taking naps, working on my tan and sipping cocktails all day.  Oh no.  I was lucky if I got a good 1.5 hours on the beach or at the pool.  It was definitely different but it was still fun and enjoyable just in a different way.
I will say this though- traveling with a baby was way better than I expected and he slept like a champ down there.

Life as a new mom has been good.  To be honest I have very few complaints.  So far I am loving my new role and feel very comforable in it.  It's weird and this may sound totally cheesy but I really feel like I was made to be a mom.
The job isn't easy and requires a lot of sacrifice but I am really enjoying all of it.  Even the gross parts, which there are a lot of.

Here are some things I've learned in the past 2 months:
- You've never been so tired in your whole life.  You think you know what tired is but you have no idea until you bring that baby home the first week.  There was a point where I thought I was never ever going to sleep for longer than 3 hours at one time ever again. It does get better I promise and now I can actually get 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep (woohoo!).
- Babies know what they want.  No matter how much you want your baby to like something if they don't like, they don't like.  They are people just like you with personalities and preferences.  You can't reason with them that they have to wear the cute beach cover up because you spent $30 on because it was just sooo cute.
- Babies change their minds- all the time.  One week they love Avent bottles the next week they refuse to use them so you're stocking your cabinets with Dr. Browns praying that this 2 week streak of liking them continues.
- Never say Never.  Remember before you had kids and you knew everything about kids and there were so many things you were never, ever, ever going to do.  Yeah you're probably going to do all or most of them in a desperate attempt to stop crying, avoid a melt down or get your baby to sleep.
-Trust your Instincts.  Over the past 4 months I've read and browsed quite a few books on babies and while they all had some good ideas I've found that just going with what I feel is right works so much better for us than trying to follow some "rules".  These authors don't know your baby, you know your baby and if your baby never naps at 1pm don't start trying to force it because this book says the baby should nap at that time.  Go with what you feel is right.
- Don't compare yourself to others!!   I had to pull myself away from blogs, books, articles, message boards because I was so busy stressing about what other people were doing that I wasn't trusting my own gut and going with it.  Other people will do things differently than you and there is no right or wrong.
- You and your husband will discuss topics that you could have never imagined talking about when you were first dating.  For instance you can find yourself talking endlessly about poop over a nice dinner.
- Every cliche you've heard about parenthood is true such as...  You can't even explain the love you feel for your baby. You might think you know what love is but the love of your own child is indescribable.   I sometimes feel like my heart is going to burst I love Miller so much. My relationship with my husband will never, ever be the same but it's so much better in a way that I can't even describe.

Moving on to my next topic...

I have a new wine that I am obsessed with.  I am currently on a Sauvignon Blanc kick- I used to be a die hard Pinot Grigio fan but post baby I don't like it at all.  This one below is light and crisp and perfect for a summer or fall night.
When I first tried wine post partum I HATED it and I was so scared it would stay that way forever. Thankfully I think it was just a mix of recovery and being exhausted and since I'm feeling like a normal human being again I can enjoy my wine again!
It retails for around $15 where I live

I hope to be back this week to post on my 1 & 2 month favorite baby products and traveling with a baby... let's hope I can get my act together to actually get that done!

  1. The poop convo is so funny. My friend was telling us the other day that her and her hubby have pulled over on the side of the road to have sex and now their pulling over to try to get their daughter to poop in a plastic toilet in the backseat.

Will def try that wine. I never know what bottle to get!

  3. You speak the truth my friend. Reading this takes me right back to my early days as a mom. Glad you and handsome little Miller are doing so well. And I LOVE sav blanc so I will give that a try. My current favorite sav blanc is by Spy Valley, if you're looking for another to try.

  7. Thank you for the great advice. I just needed them right now as I am a new mom as well for 9 weeks old son. I also stopped reading magazines and chat lines for a while.

I want to ask you how you have been able to put your baby sleep for such a long period of time. Do you feed a lot before sleep or play special noise for him to relax to sleep for a long time? I appreciate if you can share with me any approaches you take.

  8. He is so cute! I can't believe he is already two months old! It goes so fast! I'm not sure when a vacation becomes a vacation again, but it is amazing how well they sleep after a day in the sun!
