Kitchen Dilemma: Brass, Polished Nickel, or Mixed Metals

As I mentioned we are finally getting to the home stretch of our first floor renovation which is exciting and stressful.   We have so many decisions to make and I feel like Kyle and I are so indecisive this time around.  When we renovated our other house 3 years ago we knew it probably wasn't our forever home so we picked things we liked but we worked hard to stay in our budget and be practical so we didn't over do it.

This time is different. We're planning to be in this house forever, or at least for a really long time so we want to make decisions that we know we're going to love for the long run and not just because it's what's in style right now.

We were all set on the aged brass fixtures and hardware when suddenly Kyle decided he might want chrome or polished nickel so now we've been discussing the two for the past few days and pulling up every inspiration photo we can find.  Our cabinets and island will be all white with a white carrara marble that has gray veining through it.

I put together these some mood boards and inspiration photos to compare.  We know that we want to use the Darlana pendants and Classic Ring Chandelier from Visual Comfort we just need to decide between the brass or polished nickel.

Here is what we've been considering for our brass options.  Even though aged brass is back we're still trending toward the more traditional style when it comes to lighting and hardware. We do like the modern look of the faucet in this one though, if we were to go with a brass faucet.

Inspiration photos:

Here are the pendants and chandelier in polished nickel.  We changed the look of the faucet, knobs and pulls for this one.  We we aren't sold on these pulls or knobs yet but we do like the look of them.  That's my dream faucet but I can't quite convince Kyle to spend that kind of money on a faucet.

Here is my third option which is a combo of brass and chrome.  Again the same lighting but different faucet, knobs, and pulls.  I do really like these knobs and pulls but I don't know if the pulls come in big enough sizes for some of our drawers which is my only concern.

So that's where we are! Would love to hear what you all think!  Do you like brass?  Do you like polished nickel or chrome?  Do you tend toward more traditional or modern design?

  1. I love the look of the aged brass pendants! I love the mixed metals too! Maybe to a mixture to please everyone? It's so hard to decide!

  2. So, I would do brass for your lights, but chrome for your sink pulls. I think brass on sinks and pulls is a huge trend and will quickly date the kitchen, but I do love it!!! And I guess you can easily change the sink fixture and pulls if you do brass and it ever looks dated? That's a pretty quick fix! So...I guess this was no help. Ha.

  3. I love mixing metals for a more layered look, and the polished nickle is warm enough to compliment the brass well.

  4. I love the mixed metals since those are such pretty light fixtures and would add another layer of dimension in the room. One thing to keep in mind with the polished metals is that every water drop, dirty hard mark, etc shows on them. If you're ok with that than go for it but if not maybe reconsider. Since this is your long term home you don't want something to bug you forever!

  5. I love the all brass for right now but feel like it will be dated eventually. I would probably go with the polished nickel option to be safe. I'm not a huge fan of the mixed metals.

  7. We were just there, I feel for you. I decided to mix metals but to keep the pulls and faucets champagne bronze/matte gold, and then use a stainless sink and appliances. We used the Delta Trinsic faucets for the main and secondary sinks, and I've used them in all the bathrooms now I love them so much. For pulls, I kept it simple with the Lew's Hardware 3 inch center to center on uppers and bottoms, and they are super sturdy, durable, and really dress up the kitchen. And maybe less trendy than the cup pulls? That's what I'm hoping :) (I think five inch total- here's it is https://www.atgstores.com/cabinet-pulls/lews-hardware-bar-series-bar-pull_g185465.html) After living with it for 2 years and using the pulls throughout the house, my thought is that the gold really warms up our otherwise white/grey kitchen (we did Super White Quartzite and white cabinets), and I love it with our light-medium original floors. Good luck, can't wait to see photos!!

  8. Seeing these all together makes me realize what a tough decision you have!! Initially seeing the brass, my immediate reaction was to go with that!!! I love it. But I also agree that the mix metals could be a perfect compromise! I love everything that you've picked out so far.

  9. Oh man! That's a hard one! Every time I'd see a new inspiration picture, I thought it looked great! Y'all really can't go wrong - I was shocked that the brass and chrome looked so good together in your last pictures :)

  10. This is so hard and dilemma I am having currently with my master bedroom addition. I really like brass (i.e. gold tones) but I worry that they are too trendy (because they are) and that 5 years from now I'll regret it. My husband likes brushed nickle-- I think that's a guy thing. As a result, we purchased a vanity with brushed nickle and now feel like we have to match everything to it, even though I don't love it. I have very eclectic taste, so it won't kill be if it doesn't all match perfectly but I think some people are appalled if all the fixtures don't match perfectly. I figure, fixtures can be swapped out at some point. I wanted to do some trendy-ish tiling in our shower but THAT you cannot swap out easily. So I say relax on fixtures. Worse case scenario, you hate them a few years from now and you change them. For example, I've been surprised how affordable cute pendants can be if you do some digging and find them on sale.

  13. Honestly I love the mixed metals look. I did it for our kitchen update (not full-on renovation) and was really pleased how it turned out. Regardless, you have excellent taste and it's going to look great!

  14. I just started changing all my brass fixtures to silver so I find it humorous that brass is making a comeback. LOL! I can't keep up. I prefer the look of silver, it's more subtle and elegant whereas brass really stands out. But if you like to keep up with the trends, I'd go with brass because that's what all the designers are saying is trending.
