This is a subject that has been weighing on me heavy lately. I absolutely love this blog and sharing pieces of my life with you here. I also love my family a lot and care a lot about their privacy and safety. Recently a few of my blogger friends have come forward discussing privacy and some of the scary things that are going on out there on the web with kids and social media. Stephanie has a great post here if you want to check it out. Just seeing these things has really got me thinking.
I could probably write a 100 paragraph post on the subject but I'm going to spare you and just say that I'm going to be changing things a bit around here. I'm still going to share about my personal life, experiences in motherhood, talk about my boys but I might just use less pictures and there will definitely be more watermarking. I still haven't decided what the best option is for me yet and I'm trying to work through a way that won't take away from this blog but will still protect my boys from the scary things out there.
If you have any suggestions I would love to hear them. If you have kids I urge you to read Stephanie's post especially if you use instagram a lot!

I would love to hear what others are doing as well on this.. I have never thought about this. Crazy people in the world.. So sad :(
ReplyDeleteI try to be mindful too. I watermark ALL of my pictures, especially of the kids and I try not to post too much about them - also as you know, I never refer to them by their names. It's a scary world!
ReplyDeleteThis actually came up on the Today show this morning and they said watermarking is the best way to do it and then also disabling the right click save as feature so people can't easily download your photos! While I don't have kiddies yet, I never share pictures of my sister's kids where you can see their faces or anything - especially since they aren't my own!! xo, Biana -BlovedBoston
ReplyDeleteHow you do disable the right click save as feature???? -Jess

We have thought about this many times and have been reluctant to put a lot of pictures of our little man out there. Also, hence why we call him "little man". We do not disclose his name just because it's a choice that we made. It's scary and so unfair what some people do. We also decided on a separate instagram for our blog so our personal accounts are private and that's where we share pictures of him. I will certainly be reading the post you linked on this topic. ReplyDeleteI just read her article and never heard of so much photo stealing before. That is just so wrong! I definitely need to be more cautious about what I share of my littles! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThis has been weighing heavily on my mind as well! Mostly on the blogging aspect. I don't really love sharing every detail of Cam's life. I've already started a change there and plan to start watermarking my IG photos. There are some weirdos out there!
ReplyDeleteI've always tagged my photos, but it's sad to think that people actually really do this, photo stealing. I've always tried to be careful about what I say on my blog, but after reading her article a week ago, I really made sure to check out some of my posts and remove them because our blogs are very public.
ReplyDeleteThis whole thing just blows my mind! It's ridiculous that people have to worry about this. So sad!
ReplyDeleteInteresting! I had to click over to read about it. I really had heard very little - I mean I've heard about pictures being stolen and used but not why. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeletei think it's a great idea to start watermarking photos if you're sharing them online! xo jillian - cornflake dreams
ReplyDeleteSteph's post on privacy is a great read and one that I am so thankful for....people are crazy!
ReplyDeleteSo glad you found some useful info in that post! It's such a fine line as bloggers and each of us has to choose what is best for our families - thanks for sharing! xox
ReplyDeleteIt deeply saddens me that there are so many crazies out there that take a good thing, and make it scary. I try to not refer to anyone in my personal life by their name (unless they're also a blogger, and then I link back to them as well) and refer to my husband as "H". I need to start watermarking my pictures, and would love to know if anyone has an easy way of doing it so it's not too time consuming.
ReplyDeleteSo many creeps out there. I hadn't even heard of the role playing on IG. WEIRD. But I've heard of people using stolen pictures of kids as their own. This is why I took down my blog now that I don't blog. (It's not why I stopped blogging - that was because I don't have the time right now - it's just why I didn't leave it up.) I keep my IG and FB private too but I only have so much faith in what privacy settings can do. Who knows these days!
ReplyDeleteI agree 100% mama! Do what you feel comfortable with!
ReplyDeleteUmmm just read the post about watermarking and baby role play. WTF sick people are out there? Whatever you continue to post, you know we'll continue to love and to read, lady :) Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI don't have any suggestions, but I think it's a good idea. Especially if it will give you a piece of mind.
ReplyDeleteGo you! I still want to share in the same way I did before I just edited some stuff. I turned all of P's monthly updates to draft mode (so I still have them!) but just sharing a little less in general. Watermark for the win it's super easy with phonto!
ReplyDeleteI just can't believe the levels that sick creepy sink to these days...but it's also the reason I've been posting far less pics of the girls and keep my Instagram private. I just don't want to take any chances... I deactivated my Facebook account over a year ago and at that time asked family to please not post pictures of the girls on social media without asking me first. I didn't like that random people I don't know were seeing pictures (and commenting on) that my sister and in-laws were posting!
ReplyDeleteAfter reading Stephanie's post I was sick to my stomach and considered not posting about my daughter at all anymore. But the purpose of starting my blog was to keep in touch with friends and family that don't live nearby, and obviously they want to hear about my daughter! I'm turned my insta to private and am going to be watermarking photos of her on the blog, and maybe be more creative about the photos I do post. Either way, I hate that we live in a society where I have to think about this.
ReplyDeleteIt definitely freaks me out. I watermark every image, and now I watermark it as close to my kids' faces as possible. I also removed our kid's names and only use initials now. I never post anything that is specific to our family. There are way too many crazy people out there. I say you can't be too private! -Jess
