Thoughts for Thursday: Playroom Progress

**Warning: I can't stop nesting around here.  No rooms are safe from my desire to clean, organize, and re-decorate.  I've currently moved onto to the Playroom while I wait for stuff to arrive for the nursery and  master bedroom. #officiallycrazy #blamemyhormones

When we were looking for our current house one thing I really wanted was a finished basement that could be used a playroom/tv room for our children.  We were lucky enough to find that but it needed some sprucing up.
Here is how it looked when we moved in.  There is one long room, then a small office/possible bedroom area and then an unfinished laundry room.

Main basement:

Office area:

Here is how it looks now:

The front half of the small room is Kyle's "man cave", otherwise known  the tv and couch and the back half is Miller's toys.
While the room looks much better than when we first moved in it still has a long way to go.  Since we're apparently in for another brutal winter and I'm going to have a newborn I really want to make this a fun family friendly space where we can spend our cold winter days.

Miller still has some big toys that reside in our family room but they're going to be moving to the playroom in the next few weeks since we need to make way for the swing and other newborn paraphernalia.  We are still going to keep toys for him in the family room but just some of the smaller ones.

Here is the office:
This room is currently a disaster but it has a plan!

Here is our plan for the basement:

- Tile the office and get a big fluffly rug for the room
- Turn office area into "man cave"/tv room- move couch and tv into that room
- Extend playroom to take up the main part of the basement
- Move Miller's big toys- like the kitchen/grill down to the basement
- Change out curtain
- Add ABC gallery wall, artwork, decor
- Add chalkboard wall? (not sure about this one yet)

Here are some inspiration photos:

So that's our plan! Not all of this will be completed pre-baby but it's fun to finally be getting this space in order.

Do you have a playroom?  Do you have any suggestions for organizing toys or keeping it relatively organized?

  2. It looks so good with the Expedits! They are the greatest invention for a playroom ever! I really wanted to do an ABC wall but when we moved, our playroom became a loft and I don't have the wall space. I started buying letters, I have like 8 or so in different colors, patterns, etc. I will send them to you for yours if you're going to do it! Just let me know!

  4. I'm just jealous you have a basement! No basements in Charleston. It's so awesome you have this whole extra room to make into a man cave or playroom.

  7. You are so lucky to have a basement! Those dang big toys are killing me. Ford's room isn't big enough to put his kitchen so I have no idea where to put it since baby swing is coming back to live in our main TV room. You should get one of those rugs that has streets on it! I bought the $12 one at Ikea and he already loves it so if you had a big one that would be hours of entertainment. Or I have seen magnetic paint and somehow glueing magnets to cars and making the wall a road!!!

  8. I'm with you on organizing pretty much everything in the house! haha! That is such a great space for the man cave/playroom! I'm with Ally, I hate that we don't have basements here because I loved ours where I grew up. I think the chalkboard wall is adorable for a playroom and love the alphabet idea!

  12. I love all your ideas, you are so lucky you have a nice basement for a playroom. We have a finished basement but it's a total man cave with all my husbands hunting and fishing stuff, not exactly kid friendly.

  16. One thing I miss about east coast houses: basements! I love having a big finished basement for a playroom. It is so nice during bad weather and it just keeps clutter/toys out of other spaces when you have a designated play space. I love the striped bins you found. Very cute and organized!

  17. Love your ideas! We have a playroom that is our guest bedroom (pull out couch) and office as well. It seems as our kids grow we add more and more storage (man they have a lot of toys). We had a contractor come build a desk with plenty of cabinets and a custom closet to help with the mess! It was a great investment. I never updated our playroom art though - I love your ideas. It will be such a fun space for Miller and baby boy (and you too). I hope you'll keep us updated on the progress!
