Boy or Girl? Old Wives Tales

Ever since I got the positive pregnancy test I've been hearing about or reading about all the old wives takes to tell the sex of the baby. As someone who has no patience and is excited to find out I had to try every test.
Since it's only one week until we find out I thought it would be fun to share and get your prediction!

Chinese Gender Predictor
According to Baby Center, legend says that the gender chart is more than 700 years old and was discovered in a royal tomb. It predicts your baby's sex based on your Chinese lunar age at the time you got pregnant and the Chinese lunar month in which you conceived. (I used the one on baby center but you can find them on a couple different websites)

Prediction: BOY

Fetal Heart Rate
This one says if your unborn baby's heart rate is higher, above 140 beats per minute, that means you're carrying a girl. A lower heart rate below 140 bpm means you're having a boy.

Prediction: GIRL
At 10 weeks- 175 beats per min
At 12 weeks- 152
At 15 weeks- 152

Ring Test
The ring test says to string your wedding ring on a string or piece of hair and then dangle it over your belly while you are laying down.  If it swings back and forth it's a boy and if it swings in a circle it's a girl.

Prediction: GIRL

I had my sister do this one on me. She held it very still over my stomach and then it would start moving in a circle until it got bigger and bigger,  it was very crazy.  We tried it on my sister- who is not pregnant- and the ring did not move at all!

Baking Soda Test
What you do is put a little bit of baking soda in the bottom of a disposable cup and then add a little bit of your urine to it. If it fizzles like a soda, its boy. If there’s no fizzle, then it's a girl.

Prediction: GIRL

This one is similar to the Drano test- which I didn't want to mess with.

Mayan Age and Year Legend
This one works by taking the mother's age at conception and the year of conception. If both are even or odd, it's a girl. If one's even and one's odd, it's a boy.
Age: 30- even
Year: 2012- even

Prediction: GIRL

Morning Sickness in 1st Trimester
If you have bad morning sickness then it's a girl, if you have little to no morning sickness it's a boy.
(I honestly find this one hard to judge because how bad you feel is somewhat subjective.)
I had nausea 24/7 for weeks 6-13 and could only live on saltines, ginger ale and pizza- I only threw up once though. So is this bad morning sickness?!  For me it was awful but for other people that might not be too bad?!

I'm calling this one a draw

Bad skin Theory
This one says that girls steal your beauty and boys enhance your beauty, so if you your face is breaking out and your hair is greasy it's a girl.  If your skin is glowing and your hair is thick and voluminous it's a boy.

Prediction: BOY

I normally have awful skin and greasy hair- so clear skin and nice thick dry hair is a huge plus for me!

Personal Predictions
Myself, my Dad, and my Mom are saying BOY
Kyle, my sister, and most of my friends are saying GIRL

So what's your prediction?   If you've already had a baby were the old wives tales correct?

  1. I am a new follower!! My chinese chart was right and the Mayan chart was right, but the ring test was wrong. I only threw up a few times, but was so queasy my entire first trimester. I had a girl. Finding out was such a fun day!! Celebrate it!!

  2. The chinese chart worked for me! I also tested out the theory with my Mom and all four of us kids- they were all correct. After I saw that, I was pretty reassured I was having a boy! I don't think the heartbeat rate is a good predictor though- ours was really fast at first (over 170) and they slow down a bit further along, at least in our case and the Dr says it's great. Either way- SO exciting!!

    1. All the old wives tales I did predicted girl including the chinese chart, heartbeat rate and ring test (though mine was done on my wrist) and bad skin and according to the Mayan thing you posted I should have had a girl.

I had a boy. So I don't really believe them now. haha

  6. All signs (pretty much) point to girl... but you are sticking with boy :) I've heard moms are usually right but I want to do all these tests too! I think they are so interesting!

Can't wait to find out what you are having!!!

    XOXO

  7. Throwing up once is not bad morning sickness. I had HG which is basically a condition they have to moniter the first few weeks of pregnancy. I was on vacation in Florida and throwing up EVERY SINGLE THING I put in my mouth. Even water. I took 2 trips to the hospital for IV bags because I was dehydrated. It was awful and I was like that right up until about the 12th week then it subsided. THANK GOODNESS. So the myth about morning sickness proved true for me, along with the gender predictor. Heart rate test proved true for me..I actually posted about this! The old wives tales proved true for me:) http://babyscardina.blogspot.com/2012/12/boy-or-girl.html

  8. So fun! I guess girl. I usually guess according to the heart rate old wives' tale. I feel it's the most dependable of the purely unscientific made up predictors. ;)

The Chinese Predictor Chart and heart rate predicted girl for me and I thought I was having a girl. Mayan test said boy. I didn't do any of the other tests. I had a girl.

    Can't wait to hear!

  9. I'm going with girl. I don't know why, other than everyone I know is having a boy right now and it'd sure be nice to have another girl around. Team Pink!

  14. Good gravy, I'd no idea there were this many old wives' tales! At this point I guess I would go for a boy, but I am the *worst* at this sort of thing. Can't wait to find out when it happens though!
