Mac or PC? Need Advice!

**First off I would like to say THANK YOU for everyone's incredibly nice comments on my Things I'm Afraid to Tell You post, it's nice to know some of you can relate to me and I'm not alone!***

Now moving on to my next serious subject-  a new computer! I am completely clueless and could use all the advice I can get.

I currently have a 3 year old Dell Inspiron laptop that sucks.   It's currently missing a space bar (that's my sister's dog's fault), has a dead battery so it must be plugged in and kept still at all times so they charger doesn't fall out, it's had at least 3 viruses, and over heats and shuts down about once a day. Basically it's awesome (note sarcasm).

I'd never really considered getting a Mac before because I've just haven't been an Apple user. My iPhone is the first apple product I've really used at length and of course I'm obsessed with  it so this got me considering a Mac but I am scared it will be to complicated or I won't figure out how to use it.  I just know how to use Windows and a PC since it's all I've been using.  I want to know that this next computer I purchase will last me awhile and not starting blowing up in 3 short years.

I just started to do some research and I figured who else to ask than fellow bloggers! So this is where I need your help!

Are there any programs that won't work with a Mac?  Is spending the $$ on a Mac really worth it?

Which one do you use?  Do you have a preference if you've used both?

Thanks!!

  3. Before grad school I needed a new computer and my fiancé encouraged me to get a Mac...I was definitely hesitant!! But - it was easy to learn how to use and you can buy the Microsoft suite to use with it. My only suggestion is to spend the money to get the pro. I have the basic Mac book and it's plastic and pieces break off and my cd/DVD part is unusable bc of the crappy plastic!! Otherwise, ive enjoyed it very much!!

  4. Mac! And be sure to get the apple care protection for it in case you ever need anything - then they won't charge you a penny for repairs and you may even get a brand new one!

  5. Don't go for the mac. totally not worth the money or the hype. Macs and PCs do the same things, and if you're looking for a laptop check the details PCs are almost always more powerful and have more internal memory...I've used both, in design school all I used we're Macs - I drank the koolaid - I wanted/needed one.... but my tech boyfriend thought i was ridiculous for even thinking about it. Now I am so grateful, to have stuck to a PC. Until Apple rationalizes their crazy laptop costs, they are a losing choice for me. But they are pretty, I do admit ;)

  6. It depends on how you want to use the computer... I personally believe Microsoft programs are better tailored to a PC, however Adobe programs work better on Macs.

From what you've described however, I think a Mac is the way to go. If you want a computer that JUST WORKS, doesn't need a lot of maintenance, and lasts a long time, go with the Mac. PCs need a lot more care in terms of keeping up with anti-virus software and managing unwanted add-ons. If you don't know how to do this yourself or don't want to bother, then the extra cost of a Mac will pay for itself over time.

I've had my Mac for 6 years now and it still works fine. I'm finally getting to the point where I want to upgrade, but it's more of a technology issue then a performance issue. I've never had a PC laptop last that long!

Good luck! PCs can definitely be more powerful but if you don't use them in a way that benefits from that added power then it's not worth the other trade-offs!

  7. MAC-- not question. I have only had Mac's for quite some time now. Started with the Macbook, then the Macbook Pro and now I have the Macbook Air. I would never look back and get a PC ever ever again!

  8. I recently switched to a MacBook Pro from a PC laptop with just about the same problems as it sounds like yours had. I could never go back to a PC! The learning curve wasn't too terrible, and I read Mac for Dummies, which was really helpful. I don't know what it is about a Mac, but I feel like I get so much more accomplished. I would definitely go for it! It's totally worth the money, and you can buy yourself an adorable Kate Spade case to go along with it! Also, count me as your newest follower!

    Cheers, Elizabeth

  9. Mac. No question. I learned in art school with a PC (weird) but moved on to a Mac when I started taking typography. I will NEVER go back. It's just a more streamlined operating system and apple care takes care of everything, even after I had my pro for years. It also has better protection against viruses which translates to everything you do on your computer besides work. Spend the $$, you won't regret it

  10. I have a Dell now, which is fine, but I had a mac before and loved it. I bought the AppleCare plan, and when it just stopped working I broufht it to be fixed. Except they told me after they opened it that the warranty wouldn't cover it, since someone spilled coffee in it. Which couldn't have happened; my eleven year old daughter and i don't even have coffee in the house. Basically, apple said "too bad." so after losing everything on it, i went with a Dell. Just as much money in the end- or close- and its nowhere near as user friendly. I wish I could get another MacBook, but I swore I'd never buy another apple product. But man...I want to.

So if you do- back up all your stuff. Often. And make them honor the warranty if something happens! As much as im anti-apple, i really wish I didn't have to be!
