Matthew's Big Boy Room

When we first moved into our house three and a half years ago we put Matthew in the small room by our bedroom because he was only 9 months old and we didn't want his crying to wake up Miller, who was only two at the time.  He eventually moved from a crib to a twin bed and we updated his room, but kept him in the small room.  Then over the past year both kids started having a hard time sleeping alone in their rooms so we had Matthew start sleeping in Miller's double bed with him.  That has worked out really well but lately they've been waking each other up in the middle of the night because one is taking up more space in the bed or one of them wakes up early and ends up waking the other one up with them (usually Miller waking up Matthew).

So we decided it's finally time to move Matthew into our bigger spare bedroom down the hall next to Miller's room and give him an updated big boy room.  We are considering doing two twin beds or bunk beds depending on what will fit best in the room.

Here is the inspiration board I came up with:

If we go with two twin beds I have my eye on the Giselle bed from Overstock.  I just love the look of it and think it would go great with his existing dresser.  Matt's favorite color is red, but I'm not about to paint a room red (especially one that gets poor light anyway) so after testing many colors I've decided on Benjamin Moore Seattle Gray.  It's the perfect light gray with a hint of blue.
I decided the best way to incorporate red into the room would be through bedding.  I fell in love with the Branson reversible quilt from Pottery Barn Kids. It has gray on the other side so if he ever changes his mind about the red, we have the gray option!

I saw these adorable animal vintage race car prints on Etsy and knew they would be perfect.  He loves race cars but I wanted to find something that is was still cute since he's only four. I don't want him too grow up too fast ;)

We already own the RH Baby and Child Kenwood dresser which we purchased for his nursery.  So we will accent it with this gold round mirror about it and it then add this black and gold lamp for extra lighting.

I thought this wire basket would be perfect for stuffed animals and toys.  I also plan to add a bookcase or wall book shelves but haven't decided where that would go yet. I think we'll have to get all the other furniture in the room and see what kind of space we have.   We will use his existing curtains which are my favorites, the Evelyn linen blackout panels in khaki from Pottery Barn Kids.

I'm hoping to start the painting this weekend. I am one of those people who actually enjoys painting rooms, even though I will admit we usually hire people to do it.  I decided since I have some free time to try and do it myself.  Well see how it goes ;)

I can't wait to show you all the finished room once it's complete.

  3. I just got this exact bed for my boys, but it’s bunk beds. I got it from Wayfair, it’s called the Tekoa twin over twin bunk bed by Mistana. We love it!!! We also got the Branson quilt for them, but have the chambray/gray version. It is so nice and soft and a nice heavy/warm weight! Such a cute big boy room you have planned!
